Letters With Lynn

Remember the days when writing letters to family and friends involved using paper and the mail? After the trip to the mailbox and sitting down with a hot cup of tea, we read our mail and reflected upon the news of our loved-ones, sometimes also getting a recipe or a clipping.

My name is Lynn and I’m in my sixties. I sometimes reminisce about the days before the onslaught of cell phone usage, the internet and social media. For years I lived in Colorado, my mother lived in North Carolina, my grandmother in Florida, and my friends in New York. It was commonplace for us to write to each other and share our lives through the mail. Sending and receiving mail was truly a pleasure and an important way for us to keep in touch with ourselves and each other.

Now, like everyone else, I also have my eyeballs stuck to devices way too much. Social media and emails can be useful and enjoyable, but I find that I feel more detached and separated from my peers.

Even with all the online avenues of connection I still feel like there is nothing as sweet as getting a nice letter out of the mailbox. It’s still the best way to spend real time with my thoughts as I watch my later years zip along.

As elders, we are moving through the decades now where the word "change" has a lot of meaning. The younger folks are still looking outward toward the material world and their futures in it. We are becoming more interested in being in the present, whilst we turn inward with a more contemplative and intentional way of living.

Letters with Lynn is a monthly gift that you can give to yourself, a friend, or a family member who values and enjoys receiving mail and would appreciate a quiet moment to ponder and journal. 

Letters with Lynn is printed mail that contains a letter, an essay, a poem, or a story. Each month will cover a topic of interest for folks over fifty with writing prompts for you to explore your thoughts and feelings about what you’ve just read.
